To Swipe Or Not To Swipe

I was watching the news the other night (me watching news is news in itself) and they were talking about how gas prices continue to go up. Most of us will drive by a gas station and compare prices. I know mi chica knows which gas stations have a good deal.

Now we gas up at COSTCO all the time. If you are familiar with COSTCO then you know their gas stations are automated so no cash accepted there. Also COSTCO has a cheaper price than non-member gas stations so for me gassing up there is an no brainer.

However, sometimes you just may have to gas up elsewhere and if you are like me then you'll be swiping that debit card through the slot. What I didn't know and I just found out is that when you do that in most gas stations you are going to be paying anywhere from 11 to 14 cents more per gallon, no wonder the Expedition we used to have took as much as $80.00 to fill up and this is almost three years ago.

I heard a Suburban driver say his gas bill to fill up the tank went beyond $100.00 ouch! The thing is that I hardly ever use cash anymore. I am almost forgetting what cash looks like, even though my Mustang has a small gas tank if I have to stop at a gas station that is not a COSTCO I could save about $3.00 per thank, multiply that by a whole year and that's a lot of money.

Some gas stations are starting to display both prices, so it's up to you pay cash and save money or use plastic and go broke.

Jose, I paid $4.47 this week and my little Nissan still cost over $30.00 to fill. I remember when I could fill it for $15.00

I'm right behind Wanda. Gas here is about $4.19 a gallon (cash). It usually takes me about $40 to fill my tank (that's not on empty mind you) for work. I can remember when I use to fill my first car all the way up for $20 and that was when it was on E.

I have recently started carrying cash for gas, which I am not fond of doing. I hate that they charge extra for the debit/credit cards. I understand they have to process them, but it seems to me that if only some gas stations enforce this than you can't tell me that there isn't some level of gouging going on. Same goes for places here that will charge you much less for gas a gallon if you buy a car wash with your fill up. I know gas stations have to make money too, but it seems like somewhere something should give...other than our wallets.

maryita, wanda, tara - My Mustang used to fill up with $15:00 back in 1999 when I bought it. It has a small gas tank and it's very thristy now it takes somewhere in the visinity of $42.00. I really didn't know they had two different prices, I imagine everybody has to process the credit card/debit purchases why the difference with the gas stations. This is just one more thing that makes me go hummmm!

When I left L.A. for my Vegas trip on Wednesday the 9th, I paid $4.49 per Gal "Regular".

In Vegas, I paid $4.24 per Gal.

Upon my return to L.A. Saturday the 12th, gas shot up to $4.59 per gal!!!!

I don't carry cash with me either. It's been a long time since I've had cash in my pocket. However, I never pay for gas with my ATM. I only use Gas Credit Cards to purchase it, pay them in full when I get the bill and build up my credit in the process:)

I think it's amazing that when we as a country are down someone still manages to kick us... I know everyone is suffering but seriously, credit card companies and debit cards already make enough money without charging us any more!
